What Is Light CO2?

Where does my money go?

100% of your donation goes directly to our mission of reducing carbon and raising environmental insights. As for your selected project, we offset your carbon footprint with over 90% of the funds we receive. As donations to Light CO2 increase, a higher percentage of each dollar you donate will go to the project. This is due to the many fixed costs we have of our website operations, tax-exempt status registration, and payment processing services. All of our team members at Light CO2 are volunteers, meaning that we have no administrative costs (compare that to the many 10% + administration fees of other organizations). Additionally, all our project partners are also 501(c) status. That means that everything donated to our organization goes directly to our mission - of providing environmental insights to everyone.

 Climate Change & Carbon?

What is climate change?

Climate Change is a long term change in the “average” weather patterns, temperature, and natural disasters. It has occurred since the beginning of time, as Earth has cycled through various heating and cooling phases. However, in recent years, more drastic changes have been noticed globally. Seas are rising, ice caps are melting, and frequency and severity in extreme weather such as hurricanes, heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, and floods are increasing. This is a direct result from human activities, more specifically the burning of fossil fuels. Fossil fuels emit dangerous greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide when burned, which travel up to the atmosphere where they trap inferred radiation. As this atmospheric layer of greenhouse gases builds, the temperatures of Earth continue to climb.

The difference between climate change and global warming

The terms climate change and global warming are often misused interchangeably. However, there are some little known differences. Global warming refers to the long term heating of the planet. Climate change encompasses global warming, but also includes a broader range of change occurring to our planet such; as rising sea levels, shrinking mountain glaciers, accelerating ice melt, and shifts in flower/plant blooming times. Most consider climate change to be the more accurate phrase to describe the long term change of Earth’s weather patterns, temperatures, natural disasters, and more phenomenons.

Global Warming

The long term heating of the planet. This is attributed to the increasing use of fossil fuels, which emit harmful greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Overtime, these gases build up in the atmosphere and trap increasing amounts of infrared radiation.

Climate Change

Global warming fits into the category of climate change. It includes a broader range of change occurring to our planet such as; rising sea levels, shrinking mountain glaciers, accelerating ice melt, shifts in flower/plant blooming times, and many more phenomenons.

Will I be affected by climate change?

Yes, everyone single person, plant, animal, and living organism on Earth will be affect by climate change. The question is, how much will you be effected by climate change? Unfortunately, underdeveloped countries with less infrastructure will be effected more than developed countries which emitted the pollution in the first place. Developed countries will still be affected largely by climate change including costal flooding, heat waves, forest fires, droughts, hurricanes, and increased food prices with less variety.

If we don’t reduce our emissions now, we can expect these results on countries like the United States by 2050:

Costal Flooding: US coastal areas will be threatened by 30 or more days of flooding each year in 2050.

Costal Flooding: US coastal areas will be threatened by 30 or more days of flooding each year in 2050.

Heat Waves: There will be 30 more days over 90 degrees F in the majority of the United States by 2050.

Heat Waves: There will be 30 more days over 90 degrees F in the majority of the United States by 2050.

Forest Fires: By 2050, the US wildfire season will be three weeks longer and up to twice as smoky.

Forest Fires: By 2050, the US wildfire season will be three weeks longer and up to twice as smoky.

Droughts: Permanent droughts for over 25% of the Earth in 2050 will increase food scarcity.

Droughts: Permanent droughts for over 25% of the Earth in 2050 will increase food scarcity.

Hurricanes: Storms like Hurricane Sandy could flood nearly a quarter of New York City or 2.15 people.

How can I prove climate change is real?

We know that it can be hard when a friend, family member, or someone does not believe in climate change. Several members of our team have struggled to prove to their parents or family that climate change is real - and their actions are meaningful. If someone is ignoring the facts and data, it can be very difficult for them to understand the problem climate change poses on humanity. We suggest that you read and learn more about climate change through organizations like Light CO2, understand their perspectives, and then have a polite in-person conversation with them. You can’t force anyone to believe what you do, but you can at least bring them awarenesses. If you’d like to talk about climate change, we’re here for you. In fact, even if you can’t bring awareness to that one person, you can bring it to hundreds by joining the Light CO2 team. Alternatively, you can follow us on social media or join our newsletter below to get more tips on climate change activism!

What are greenhouse gases?

Greenhouse gases trap infrared radiation in Earth. They act like a “blanket” in the atmosphere. Without enough greenhouse gases, the Earth is too cold. When there are too many greenhouse gases, Earth overheats. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the leading greenhouse gas, causing the most damage to Earth. Other greenhouse gases include water vapor, methane, ozone, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons.

What does carbon dioxide do?

After their short life span releasing energy, fossil fuels leave behind greenhouse gases which damage the environment and the health of humans, animals, and plants. Greenhouse gases are the leading contributor to climate change, specifically carbon dioxide.

Learn more about carbon dioxide below:

Environment

3 million hectares of land (that's 11,583 square miles or 30,000 square kilometers) have been lost due to oil and gas well pads, storage tanks, and associated roads, only in North America since the year 2000. Or the equivalent of 120.2 million bushels of wheat on lost cropland. Yearly oil spills have harmed or killed approximately 82,000 birds of 102 species, nearly 6,165 sea turtles, and up to 25,900 marine mammals. Carbon kills our environment.

Health

Air pollution from burning fossil fuels totaled $2.9 trillion in 2018, calculated in the form of work absences, years of life lost, and premature deaths. This cost represents 3.3 percent of global GDP or about $8 billion per day. An estimated 9 out of 10 people worldwide are exposed to air pollutants that exceed World Health Organization air quality guidelines. They state, "Air pollution is the largest single environmental health risk, estimated to kill 1 in 8 people globally, due to heart disease, stroke, respiratory disease, and cancer."

Where does carbon dioxide come from?

Carbon dioxide comes from almost everywhere - volcanic outgassing, the combustion of organic matter, and the respiration processes of living organisms. However, in recent years, the prevalence of carbon dioxide has exponentially grown through the combustion of fossil fuels. Read The Story Of Carbon Here.

Where Is Carbon?

Greenhouse gases are mostly released during the combustion of fossil fuels. This includes cars, manufacturing, and electricity production. Other sources of greenhouse gases include the agricultural industry, forest fires, and urbanization (where large areas of greenery are replaced with cities and factories).

Isn't carbon dioxide good for plants?

Yes, carbon dioxide and many other greenhouse gases are actually beneficial to plants! Trees, flowers, and even grass use photosynthesis to produce the energy they need to survive. In this process, they use the sun to convert CO2 and water into cellulose and starch - with a byproduct of oxygen. Nevertheless, too much of anything is never good. At this point in time, we’re rapidly moving past the amount of atmospheric CO2 levels that are healthy for plants. These increased greenhouse gases will be detrimental to plant growth with higher temperatures and an altered environment with less resources like rain. However, by taking steps like planting more trees, we can actually reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere and even offset our own emissions.

What is a carbon footprint?

A carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere from a particular activity (per year in metric tons). Carbon dioxide is not the only greenhouse gas, so Light CO2 has assessed the impact factors of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide to include under your carbon footprint. We have created a unique survey to find your personalized carbon footprint. After you finish this survey, you can see an infographic on your biggest sectors of pollution and ways that you can offset that pollution.

Is everyone's impact on the enviroment the same?

Everyone lives a different lifestyle, so everyone has a diverse impact on the environment. A variety of factors come into play when determining the emissions of an individual. For example, driving to the grocery store burns a certain amount of fuel, resulting in a certain amount of emissions from fossil fuel combustion. But that grocery store is powered by electricity, which was generated by either renewable or fossil fuels. Also, items in the store were all shipped there, factoring into the total carbon footprint of an apple to a shirt. Beyond that, the fruits, vegetables, and meats that the store sells were all grown or raised on farms, a process that produces methane, which has a greenhouse effect 25 times greater than CO2. Then, to generate a yearly carbon footprint, all actions taken throughout one's life must be taken into account. Luckily, we have simplified all this math down to three questions. In this short quiz, you enter your zip code, diet, and transportation to analyze your impact. Afterward, select a project to offset your emissions and how you pay. We believe that everyone can make a difference, no matter their standing.

I want to reduce my footprint

Great! We’re happy to help you reduce your CO2, that’s why we’re here. Read some article on how to reduce your daily emissions or offset your lifetime or travel footprints.

What does it mean to be carbon neutral?

Being carbon neutral means that you do not emit any carbon dioxide or greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Think of it as reducing your greenhouse gas pollution non-existent by subtracting it out with carbon reducing projects. Many individuals, organizations, and businesses seek carbon neutral status to reduce the effects of climate change. Carbon offsetting helps to reduce and slow the impacts of climate change.

🏭 Total Emissions +🌲 Project Reduction = 🌍 Carbon Neutral

If I can't reduce everything, how can I be carbon neutral?

You’re right, it is impossible for anyone to emit zero carbon dioxide - if they did, they couldn’t even breath. However, by taking steps to reduce our emissions as much as possible and offsetting the rest of our emissions with organizations like Light CO2, we can achieve this status. Carbon neutrality can be achieved through prevention of new emissions (renewable energy) or the removal of emissions (tree planting). We believe in the concept of “additionality,” where without the project greenhouse gas emissions would occur. In other words, the employment of the project results in less CO2 than without it.

1. Reduction

First, take steps to reduce your emissions as much as possible. We have a variety of reduction articles you can read to learn easy ways you can decrease your carbon footprint. These can be things as simple as riding a bike to your work/school or as complex as building an energy efficient home.

2. Prevention

Next, you may choose to offset your remaining emissions by funding prevention projects. At Light CO2, these include solar, wind, and sun (coming soon). These projects are ideal for offsetting your emissions while providing benefits to the communities involved such as clean energy.

3. Absorption

If you’d like a more direct approach to reaching carbon neutrality, choose an absorption project. Currently, Light CO2 offers tree planting, where we will calculate and plant the amount of trees needed to absorb all greenhouse gases you’ve emitted. This project is perfect for individuals or organizations looking to become “truly” carbon neutral.

I want to be carbon neutral

Great, let’s get started! After you have read a few of our articles on reduction, you can eliminate the remainder of your footprint by taking our personalized carbon survey.

How can I afford offsetting my footprint?

We know that everyone is different. Everyone lives different lifestyles, has different carbon footprint, and has a different budget. No matter who you are, you can easily make a difference in this world with Light CO2. We’re working towards a future where everyone is carbon neutral - or even carbon negative (absorbs CO2, not releases it). The first step to offsetting your footprint in your budget is to take our personalized carbon survey. Through only three questions, we can calibrate where your emissions go and what they are. Typically, if you have a lower budget, you’ll also have a lower footprint as you have less money to spend on luxuries. After this assessment, simple choose how you want to offset your emissions (solar, wind, or tree planting) - they’re all the same price, so your offset choice won’t effect your budget. Next, you can move onto a payment frequency, if your budget allows you can offset your entire year, or to make affordable payments choose monthly. Your monthly donation to Light CO2 will make you carbon neutral, save the environment, and provide environmental insights for a price cheaper than a coffee.

How Do You Offset?

What are carbon offsets?

Carbon credits, also known as carbon offsets, are financial units representing the removal of one metric tonne of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. At Light CO2, we include the impacts of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide into our carbon offsets - reasoning the possible price variant between other organizations. While some carbon credits are cheaper than others, the quality of the project may vary. We ensure that every single project Light CO2 offers is verified, “additional,” and deeply reviewed by our team and the world’s carbon standards.

💵 Carbon Offsets/Credits = 🌲🌲🌲 % CO2 Carbon Reduced

How are projects selected and verified?

Good question! At Light CO2, we hand selected every project after it has passed review under several major carbon standards. Every project we list are deeply vetted and are 501(c) status like us to ensure reliability. Rather than thinking of quantity, Light CO2 measures our projects in success. For example, under our tree planting project, we ensure your “trees needed to offset” matches the trees that are actually planted. This means that we’ll cover the costs for any trees that die or do not fully develop. In addition to sending you email updates (if you’re subscribed Light CO2’s newsletter “The Ray”) on your project, you can even visit it by filling out the form at the bottom of each project page. If it ever turns out a project didn’t follow through with carbon absorption or prevention, we’ll terminate our partnership and redirect your donation to a validated project. Visit our project pages below to learn more about each, see sustainability goal achievement status, and explore a FAQs page specific to that project.

How is my footprint calculated?

We’ve mastered the math of carbon offsetting down to three simple questions. It takes less than a minute to offset a years worth of carbon with Light CO2. All your information, from zip code to travel distances, stays secure with Light CO2. We protect your privacy. Below, you can view how your environmental impact is calculated. Keep in mind our Lifetime CO2 Calculator does not include air travel information. Air travel information is filled separately with our Travel CO2 Calculator.

Every Question - Explained:

US Zip Code

Your zip code is the most critical component of Light CO2’s Lifetime CO2 calculator. A zip code can show your electricity supplier data (ie: 15% renewable), natural gas usage, housing efficiency, average house size, the number of people living in a household, and much more information. These results are based on the most recent EPA emission factor data and Regents of the University of California, Berkeley emissions via zip code research. We never share your zip code with any third party organization.

Your Diet

Diet is a major contributor to global warming - accounting for almost one-fourth of our lifetime emissions. We’ve used advanced estimates to take into account harmful gasses like Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide that result from the agricultural industry. Environmental impact is assessed through how meat intensive your diet is. Specifically, Light CO2 has analyzed data from the USDA and the IPCCs diet emission factor data over a life cycle assessment. Carbon footprints have been calculated on a 2,600 calorie daily diet with food waste considered (U.S.A.).

Transportation

We all get around this busy world somehow - most commonly a gas powered vehicle. Light CO2 has approximated transportation data on a 22 mile per gallon vehicle (403 grams of CO2 per mile) according to the EPAs most recent vehicle emission tests. Additionally, we’ve taken into account the impact of starting an engine up and additional pollutants such as methane and nitrous oxide. If you do not get around by a gas or diesel vehicle, simply select none - estimated based on your zip code will factor into your transportation (ie: public transit).

The Travel Calculator - Explained:

Air Travel

As our travel results in harmful gasses like Carbon Dioxide, Methane, and Nitrous Oxide, among others: Light has developed a formula that accounts for each emission's distinct effect on our Earth's warming. More specifically, we have taken into account that some 25% of emissions result from taking off and taxi at approximately 0.25 metric tons with 0.11 metric tons pollution on hauls per hour (Figures based on a Boeing 747). These calculators are why you may see that the longer your flight, the less impact it has linearly. Premium passengers assume a 75% increase in pollution.

Form Formula Request Form:

Journalism is the voice of the voiceless. It empowers, educates, and inspires our community to do the right thing. When you write with Light CO2, you share the voice of climate change. Share tips on reducing your emissions, stories of those impacted the most, analysis of data, and so much more. We’re simply the catalyst of your story.
